What is the ‘Filter Bubble’?

Well, its the term used to describe the behaviour of many top web search services and web sites to ‘Personalise’ your experience and the information presented to you.

Google, Facebook and many others now use a range of factors to assess the relevance of the results and commercial suggestions they present to you. The results and content you see can be very different to those seen by others for the same subject search.

Every year, thousands of entrepreneurs, change-makers, innovators and scientists gather in Long Beach, California for TED, the world’s leading thought conference. In 2011, the audience included executives from Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, and many other Silicon Valley startups.

Eli Pariser explained the filter bubble concept and then called on them from the main stage to change how they do business, it wasn’t at all clear how they’d react…

DuckDuckGo

One new search engine gaining popularity is www.duckduckgo.com. DuckDuckGo is operated by one individual, but is attracting some attention in the geek world.

Not least because of its fanatical support for the privacy of its users. There’s a great explanation of how Google tracks your use of the Internet and how Google filters your results and experiences on the web.

The most visited web site to be accessed by handheld devices was Facebook. Some 43 million hours were spent on it, via smartphones in December 2010.

“Addicted”

The report said that 58% of adult males owned a smartphone compared to 42% of females. Among teenagers the trend was reversed with 52% of girls using smartphones against 48% of boys.

And the trend for using smartphones to access the web is likely to keep increasing as 37% of adults and 60% of teenagers described themselves as “addicted” to their smartphone!

With the Apple iPhone, Blackberry and Android based devices leading the way, UK internet browsing is set to significantly move away from the computer desktop to the handheld device very rapidly.

The internet news sites have been having a right old go at Internet Explorer, Microsoft’s browser software.

Many sites have reported this morning that a survey, carried out by AptiQuant, concluded that people who use Internet Explorer tend to have lower Intelligence Quota than users of competitive browsers.

However, this now appears to be an elaborate hoax and, possibly, a brilliant marketing ploy by AptiQuant.

Mind you, the logic of why the users of alternative browsers might have a higher IQ, appears sound….

“Those with lower levels of IT literacy do not know what a browser is and will simply use whatever application is installed on their PC. In most cases, that will be Internet Explorer. Similarly, power users and developers will investigate different options and actively keep their software up-to-date. It’s logical then that Opera — a lesser-known browser with a steeper learning curve — attracts users with a higher IQ.”

Hoax or not, I’ve always advise my clients to move away from Internet Explorer.

Those who are even slightly technical, use Firefox, Chrome or Opera. Those who aren’t technical, SHOULD! – Seamus Clarke, Web Designer and Client Satisfaction Guarantor.

Simply, this is becuase the other browsers conform to a higher level of shared standards, robustness and security. And as a web designer, I do like standards that make my job easier and keep my clients happy.

So, whether you’re technical or not… why not try out some of the great alternatives to Microsoft Internet Explorer?

Mozilla Firefox | Google Chrome | Opera | Apple Safari
