Search Engine Optimisation Knowledge is a valuable commodity
I was invited to sit in on a Belfast eCommerce and Search Engine Optimisation seminar, looking at the recent developments in eCommerce systems and Search Engine Optimisation techniques.
The seminar was delivered by a local guy who really knew his stuff, put it across really well and showed great examples of where he had put theory into practice. He covered topics such as eBay shops, Paypal payment systems, OS Commerce, Google Analytics and Google Adwords.
Whilst little of the content was new to me, I still managed to pick up a couple of useful gems and gained a valuable networking opportunity. ( See, always in sales mode! )
The session was directed towards people who want to sell online - existing businesses and startup businesses. My understanding was that few of them were experienced in designing web sites, promoting a web site or online marketing.
These were the type of people who know their own business, want to know whatīs required to sell on line, but donīt really want to get tied up in the intracacies of web technologies.
So, imagine my surprise when the speaker told a room full of potential clients that this stuff is so easy to do that they shouldnīt really expect a web design professional to charge them to do it!
Perhaps I grasped the wrong end of the stick, but I certainly think that the expertise and knowledge required to get a site to the top of Google - and the extra sales that might generate - is valuable and worth paying for.
